WHO AM I?

My name is SAMNANG, and I am from Cambodia. Right now, I am a fourth year student at Mahajularlongkor Chiang Mai University faculty of Humanity, major in English. I am 22 years old and not a talkative man. I am a son of a farmer. I have two brothers and two sisters, and I am a third child in my family. Do you want to know what the meaning of my name? The word "SAMNANG" means "Lucky." So I am a lucky man( just kidding). Let me tell you why my parents named me this. During the time my family live in the refugee camp(Kaho I Dang Refugee Camp, Thailand 1980-1990) every family included my family are looking for the third country to live such as U.S.A, Canada, Australia. etc. because we can't expect that when will the war in Cambodia is over. At that time we have only four members in my family my parents, brother and sister. My parents tried to apply to live in U.S.A so many times. Later on she got pregnant, it was me and she just about to give birth to me. At the same time the news was come out which mean the U.S authority accepted us to live there. One month before my family departure my mom gave birth to me. So we got 5 members in my family. My dad was very happy, and he said I am a lucky son who was born just on time(the time we will go to U.S.). Therefore, he named me SAMNANG which means LUCKY. One week before we leave we have to address ourselves at the U.S. authority. You know what they said to us. They said NO that mean they do not allow us to go, because the members of my family is different from the application( before 4 members and now 5 member). So we come home with the unhappy day. Do you think am I really a lucky man or the symbol of unlucky? Whatever, it remained just the past thing now, and I am happy for what I have now. I will do my best to pay back to my family, my parents, my lovely brother and sister. To say sorry for what happened to my family at that time.

Where is my family now?

In 1992s, my family had moved back to our homeland as the announcement of the Cambodian government. Right now, my family live in Kompong Cham province. We live there for almost 8 years, and my dad got sick and passed away. At that time I just about 9-10 years old. My oldest sister got married to a local man in my village and she has two lovely daughters. My brother has became a monk one year later after my father death.

He tried to study hard until he got a degree from the University. All his friend call him JERRY because he is smart guy. He graduated from this University two years ago(the same university with me). Now he became an English teacher. My youngest sister is studying in the high school at my province. She is 18 years old. My mom stay at home with my nieces. My sister and my brother-in-law got a work at the city. We have time to stay together at home just in the important occasion such as Khmer New Year. But I always call mom and everyone every one month or sometime they call me. I love my family and I miss them very much. I think when I graduated I will go to live with them.
