Human Rights Defender in Cambodia

From 1975-1979 more than 2 millions ( TWO MILLION) people were killed in Pol Pot(Khmer Rouge) period. On 06,07 July, 1997 hundreds and thoudsand people were killed in the polictical confliction. Recently, on 22 November, 2010 (9:30 pm) more than 355(some people said 400) people were killed in the stamped during Water Festival. Now, thousands of families lost their farm lands, and many them were injured, imprisioned, and killed in the protesting for justice. WHERE IS THE PEACE? HOW LONG CAN WE SURVIVE? WHAT DO WE HAVE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION? GOVERNMENT GRANTED LAND CONCESSION FOR 99 YEARS TO FOREGIN COMPANIES........WHY NOT 100 YEARS?

After the brutality regime was over, Cambodian have started their lives from the empty hands, and hope that this nightmare will disappear forever. But thing does not go according to their plans. In the following year many people were killed as I mentioned above. I don't really understand why these things happend to my country, Cambodia. In my whole life I wanted to see the smiling of my people. How can I help them? They worked so hard to get a little money. Every morning when I woke up I saw the skinny faces. I always have one hope in my mind that one day the people around the world would spend their time at least one second look at us. I am speaking on behalf of humanity, so I hope you will help us. Alright, you may wonder what is all about in the video above ? So let me try to explain you as much as I can.......

The monk who helped the people to seek for justice, and cite the khmer poem named Loun Sovath. He is facing a lot of problems in Cambodia now as his activity in his community. Anyway, I am really proud of him becuase he sacrifices everything to help the people. He risked his life for the people. He said "As the monk's life I was supported by the people around me, so I need to help them when they have problem." It is right. Even I am not expert in Buddhism or any religion, but for me, I think the aim of every religion is to bring happiness to people's life. Thus, whenever people have problem the monk have to help them. On the other hand, Ven. Loun Sovath tried to help people by using non-violent way. So it is the right way in Buddhism to solve the problem of the people. Let me tell you one thing in Cambodia, for the people's perspective said the monk should not involve in polictical issue. They need to stay in the temple and practice the Buddha's teaching, that is all. For me I think it is the wrong idea. Don't we think that the monk are so selfish when they stay only in the temple, and seek for the happiness for themselves whereas so many people around them are living in suffering? For my idea, it does not mean that I want the monk to stand as candidate or form any party in the country. I just want the monk and the government to have a muatual understanding toward each other. Why? Because I think, the government can support the people mostly on the physical or material happiness whereas the monk can support the people on the mental happiness which we called mind food. I do believe that everyone in this world will need both of these factors, right? The people voted for somebody to be their leader and they need the peaceful life and the development back. The people offered the food or any thing to the monk and they need the mental food back. It is fair, right!... So why the monk cannot join or help the people whenever they have problem.

But this goodness does not fit to the rich or powerful people. As the Sangharacha or the head of the monk in Cambodia name Tep Vong has announced the letter to the publice that they will not allow this monk(Ven. Loun Sovath) to stay in any temple in Cambodia. They said this monk has brokend the rule in monkhood as he went to join with those protestors. They tried to arrest him many times, but the people around him tried to protect him so the police or the opposite monk cannot do anything to Ven. Loun Sovath. Ven. Loun Sovath also was warning many time from the people who stand in the company side that they would arrest him, or hit him if he does not step away from this case.

As you can see in the video above some people were holding the photo of Priminister Hun Sen (four terms priminister) as they think he is the only one who can help them. But the problems were happening continuously across the country. So who can get rid of this problem? The government or the monk? I think both of them. But if they still turn apart from each other the problem will never end.

I may not know the teachings of Buddhism, but from a Buddhist friend of mine, he told me that non-violence is a belief that is being observed by those who practice the religion. But this monk, Loun Sovath, is such a brave person. He is courageous enough to see past religious beliefs and look at reality and took a stand against the injustices. There are indeed still a few people who are true patriots despite the rampant consumerism mentality that's taking over the world right now.

I am with you when you said that your people have suffered so much, it's like they were robbed off the smiles in their beautiful faces. May one day, the smile be brought back to their faces.

Cheers,

This post has opened my eyes. It's such a sad story, but there is still hope because of people like you who shed light on an unjust situation.
